Nine-Tails captured! Pain springs his trap: with Sage Mode exhausted and his clones destroyed, Naruto is pinned by the Deva Path's chakra rods, helpless, the six Paths closing in to extract the Nine-Tails at last. The episode is the arc's darkest turn for its hero — the boy who came to save Konoha staked to the ground, the beast within about to be taken, everything Jiraiya trained him for seemingly for nothing. Pain stands triumphant over a captured jinchuriki. The invasion's victory looks complete, the hero's defeat near-total.
